What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An air source heat pump (ASHP) uses a fan to extract heat from the atmosphere and convert it into heating and hot water for your home or business. ASHP’s are very simple to install, with benefit of not needing additional ground work, and require very little maintenance.

How does it work?

The fan on the ASHP pulls air through the body of the unit, passing it through a heat exchanger which contains a super chilled refrigerant gas (the evaporator). The gas carries the heat through a compressor which reduces its volume and further increases the temperature. This heat can now be used to cater for all heating and hot water needs in your property.

 The Heat Pump

Pulls air through the body of the unit passing through a heat exchanger, and then a compressor to increase the temperature

 The Heating

This heat is then used throughout the building.

 The Hot Water

The remaining heat is stored in a hot water cylinder that can be used at any time

How efficienct is an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP)?

Throughout the year air temperature fluctuates much more than ground temperature and consequently ASHP’s have to work harder during the winter months. However, the advances in ASHP’s in recent years has meant that the gap in efficiency between ground and air source heat pumps is much smaller. With less or even no ground works and the ability to install an ASHP on nearly any property, they are the cheaper easier option.

Benefits:

  • A low carbon environmentally friendly heating system
  • Reduces monthly energy bills
  • Ideal for properties that have limited indoor space
  • Works with a variety of heat distribution systems including underfloor heating and radiators
  • Requires minimal maintenance
  • Receive government incentives for opting for a low carbon energy supply
  • No fuel storage needed, making ASHP’s one of the safest form of heating available.
  • Long lifespan, often outlasting a standard boiler 2 or 3 times over!
  • Easy installation process

Government Incentives

A new government backed scheme, called The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is on offer to help with the initial cost of installing a Heat Pump. This is a voucher-based scheme providing people with an upfront grant up to £7,500 when investing in an Air Source Heat Pump. And what’s better is that this is an installer based scheme so we take care of everything for you!
